Protest in Southern Forests with a message Protect World Class Forests for
Climate Change

“Conservationists protest in the Picton Valley this morning is to pressure
the Federal Government to protect Tasmania’s forests for their World
Heritage Values. Thirteen conservationists have set up a road block on a
logging road to clear felling of forest adjacent to the World Heritage Area,
a person is perched on a tripod,” Huon Valley Environment Centre’s Jenny
Weber said.

“Adjacent to the World Heritage Area in the Picton Valley, a globally
significant and carbon rich forest area of 30 hectares is currently being
clear felled. The World Heritage Committee has consistently expressed
concern about Tasmania’s tall eucalypt forests. A 2008 meeting of the World
Heritage Committee in Quebec, Canada, resolved that the Federal Government
should “consider, at its own discretion, extension of the property to
include appropriate areas of tall eucalypt forest, having regard to the
advice of IUCN”,

“Despite this resolution from the international expert conservation body the
Federal Government is responsible for the continued clear felling high
conservation value forest adjacent to the World Heritage Area and the loss
of wildlife habitat,” Jenny Weber said

“Logging and new roads in forests that have potential outstanding universal
value threaten the option of adding these areas to the World Heritage Area.
Despite the resolution by the IUCN that a moratorium on logging is desirable
in these areas, highly destructive logging practices continue,” Jenny Weber
said

“In solidarity with a global climate change day of action ‘Fossil Fools
Day’, today we join people around the world, who are taking action on the
root causes of climate change. Despite global climate change emergency,
deforestation, regeneration burns and the loss of species in Tasmania
continues. The Federal Government and Forestry Tasmania are the fossil
fools, by contributing to climate change through deforestation in Tasmania,”
Jenny Weber said.
