STILL WILD STILL THREATENED
MEDIA UPDATE 29.04.10
ASSAULTED CONSERVATIONISTS BACK IN COURT
The court trial of logging contractors involved in alleged assaults on
forest protesters in the Upper Florentine Valley is back in court today. The
trial will commence at 10am in the Hobart Magistrates court and has been
allocated two days.
Miranda Gibson, 28, of Hobart and Nishant Datt, 23 of Lucaston were
assaulted by logging contractors at a protest against logging of a
contentious old growth area. The incident was captured on video and images
made headlines across the nation.
“The ongoing conflict over old growth logging has been occurring for
decades. Tasmania’s want to see an end to the conflict in our forests and
our communities, the State Government must heal the divide and develop a
solution that gives ancient forests the protection they deserve and ensures
a sustainable future for the timber industry. There is no sustainable future
in logging of ancient forests, as the industry faces downturns and stagnant
markets there is necessity for re-invention. The transition out of ancient
forests is crucial, not only to save what is left but secure the longevity
of the timber industry.” Said spokesperson Ed Hill
