Weld Valley faces new logging onslaught, Conservationists return to
defend ancient forests
"Conservationists have today staged a non violent direct action in the
Weld Valley, Southern Tasmania. A conservationist is perched on a
tripod, and two others have attached themselves to the structure. This
action has been taken to halt logging in two ancient forest areas," Huon
Valley Environment Centre's spokesperson Jenny Weber said.
"A fresh logging onslaught against wild forests is being carried out in
the Weld Valley with seven forest areas being logged. Around two hundred
hectares is currently being destroyed after approximately 12km of new
logging roads have been built in the Weld Valley over the past few months.
Despite logging in ancient forests being a criminal act in this global
climate emergency, Tasmania's and Australia's Labor Governments continue
to sanction the loss of valuable ecosystems such as those in the Weld
Valley," said Ms Weber.
